The Italian design firm and carmaker Pininfarina is said to be developing a new electric sports car.
According to latest reports, Ferrari’s frequent collaborator Pininfarina is working on an electric sports car. It wouldn’t be the first time the brand ventured into the world of car manufacturing, having previously produced numerous concepts in the past.
Best-known for designing a number of Ferrari models, the brand was purchased last year by Indian tech giant Mahindra.
Earlier this year, the brand showcased its first hydrogen-powered sports car, the H2 Speed, at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
Some are speculating that, the brand is now working on a production model and it’s likely going to be an EV.
Having established itself as a serious contender in the car design world, the brand could now be looking into conquering the automotive world as a whole.
Mahindra’s involvement is likely the cause, as the acquisition of the brand by the Indian giant, now allows the brand to experiment more with its concepts and ideas.
The brand’s involvement in Formula E is also said to be partly responsible for the decision. Pininfarina has the technology required to make an EV happen available, meaning it could in theory produce a great-looking and functional EV if it wanted to.
Electric vehicles are currently all the rage, with numerous manufacturers choosing to explore alternative powertrains than ever before.
Tesla’s success with the recent Model 3 has opened many doors for carmakers who previously would’ve never thought about building a fully-electric car.
Whether Pininfarina will actually go through with its plans or how long it will take is not clear at the moment. Knowing the brand however, if it produced a car it would likely sports a unique appearance reflecting the brand’s aesthetic.
It’s definitely an exciting time for the ever-changing automotive industry.
